Scott Robinson

SCOTT ROBINSON is an American jazz musician best known for his work on various styles of saxophones, but who plays a variety of instruments including flute, clarinet, trumpet, sousaphone, and more ( including some lesser known/seldom heard like the conch shell, egg shaker, Chinese gong, and bamboo flute). Scott will be joining us on saxophone this year (and maybe he will surprise us with some others) While still in high school Scott won the Louis Armstrong Award and The Best Soloist Award from the National Association of Jazz Educators. After studying at the Berklee College of Music, in Boston, Scott became their youngest faculty member at the age of 22. He has appeared on more than 200 LPs and CDs with well-known musicians such as Lionel Hampton, Paquito D’Rivera, Sting, Ella Fitzgerald, Elton John, John Pizzarelli, as well as the New York City Opera- eleven were under his leadership, and two of these recordings won a Grammy Award. Scott has received four fellowships from the national Endowment for the Arts, as well as serving as a Jazz Ambassador for the US State Department.

Scott’s musical travels have taken him around the globe! This summer he has been in Germany and Japan, then back to NYC where he will honored at the Historical Brass Symposium, where they will premiere a piece commissioned for him. Immediately following that he leaves for Scotland. We are so pleased that he has Wilmington NC on his calendar for the first weekend in February 2018!

This is Scott’s first North Carolina Jazz Festival appearance, and we are looking forward to his “quirky”, adventurous approach to jazz!
