KATIE THIROUX (bass & vocals) Born in Los Angeles, Katie began her musical career early, beginning with violin lessons at age 4, then, switching to acoustic bass at age 8. By 10, she landed principal roles in the LA Opera, but became captivated by an early recording of Lionel Hampton, prompting her to begin private lessons with jazz vocalist Tierney Sutton at age 12. In 2005, she received the new talent award from the Los Angeles Jazz Society, followed in 2006 by the Phil Ramone Presidential Scholarship to Berklee College. After graduation and a stint teaching at the Berklee International School in Ecuador, Katie returned to Los Angeles to complete a Master of Jazz Bass from California State University.
In 2013, Katie formed The Katie Thiroux Quartet with guitarist Graham Dechter (Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, Eliane Elias, Michael Buble), saxophonist Roger Neumann (Anita O’Day, Woody Herman) and drummer Matt Witek (Larry Fuller, John Pizzarelli Quartet). Working together as often as their schedules allow, her group’s most recent effort is an album that was released in February 2015.
Ms Thiroux’s swinging bass, clear vocals and inspired arrangements are reflective of her idols, Ray Brown, Oscar Peterson, Chet Baker and Anita O’Day.
